1. This tutorial will show you how to use advanced search in Oria.

2. Start by going to Advanced Search.

3. By default, you search in the Bergen University Library, which means all material available at UiB.

4. You can choose to expand your search to Norwegian academic libraries or to all sources registered in Oria.

5. As an example, we can search for literature in maritime law.

Enter the term "Maritime law" in the search field.

6. Click the button Search.

7. This search yields many results, so we may need to make it more specific.

8. In the menu next to the search field, you can select and limit the search to a specific field, for example subject.

9. Click Search to execute the search once more.

10. The number of results has been reduced significantly by limiting to subject.

11. To narrow down your search even more, you can combine several search terms.

For example, write "passenger*" in the second search field.

12. This searching technique is called truncation, and is used to include as many word variants as possible.

Because of the asterisk, this search will include terms such as passenger, passengers, passangering and other variations.

13. In the menu next to the second search field, select the Boolean Operator to decide how you want to combine the various search fields.

The available Boolean Operators are: AND, OR, NOT.

14. "AND" operator will only return matches that contain both words.

This will narrow down your search and make it more specific.

15. "OR" will give results that contain either the terms in the first search field or the terms in the second search field.

This will expand the search.

16. In other words: Or gives more.

You can use "OR" to combine multiple synonyms and related terms.

17. "NOT" will exclude matches containing the terms in the search field next to it.

This can be used to exclude certain topics from the results.

18. In this example, we want to find maritime law related to the transport of passengers.

Therefore, we choose the Boolean operator "AND" that combines the search criteria.

19. Before sending the search, you have the option to limit your results to a specific material type, language or year of publication.

20. Click Search to execute the search once more.

21. The list of results contains various material types, but mainly books and articles.

22. You can make further refinements to your search using the filters in the right margin

Include or exclude certain material types, or limit to a range of publication years.

23. If you select several criteria at the same time, use the "Apply filters" button at the bottom of the page.

24. You can lock the filters by clicking on the padlock icon next to the selected criteria, at the top of the facet panel.

The locked choices will then be applied to your next search.

You can remove restrictions
either individually or all at once.

25. You also have the option to sort the results according to various criteria.

Select whether the results should be sorted by relevance, date, author or title.

26. Now you know how to perform an advanced search in Oria.
